The archaic temples

The first examples of archaic temples are located in Corinth with the temple of Apollo and Samos with the temple of Hera, the so-called Heraion.
The temple of Apollo at Corinth is a Doric temple periptero with a peristyle of 6 to 15 columns of 6 meters, monolithic, reflecting the dominance of the city (already seen in the PLO Chigi). The cell has two columns in pronaos nell'Opistodomo and interior, the naos is divided into two parts: one is divided into three naves by two rows of four columns, while the other two rows of two columns.
The temple of Hera at Samos is an Ionic temple Diptera with more than 100 columns forming an arcade practicable. The columns each have more than 40 grooves, thus forming a striking effect light.
The base of the columns has the bull trochilo crushed and meticulously worked on the lathe.
The Greek temples provided plenty of room for decorations and painterly sculptures. However many problems arose in the decoration style of gables, because it was very difficult to make a figure in a triangular space.
By contrast, about the sixth century it began to sculpt bas-reliefs of the temples in pediment
One of the most important examples is the scene of the Gorgon nell'Artemision of Corfu. At the center of the triangle of the pediment stands Medusa kneeling in an attempt to flee to Perseus. At his side are depicted the children and guardians of the temple two panthers. Instead, the corners are represented conceptually separate from the first scene: a Gigantomachy and a scene of the Trojan War.
Both the Doric temple that the Ionian and techno provided ample work space: the first in the metopes, frieze in the entire second.
metopes In another problem was caused by the need to represent the few figures in each metope, while maintaining a narrative of all the metopes.
One example is found in metope Treasure Island (temple where they were collected offerings to the gods) Sicyon, depicting three men just take away the stolen cattle.
Ionic friezes In contrast, the main problem was to find a scene fit to hold a two-dimensional space is very large.
A striking example is provided by us Sifin treasure, because in so large a space as the frieze are carved three scenes: the Judgement of Paris to the west, south of the rat Leucippidi, east and of the Council of Finally, the Gigantomachy north.
